AKIRA KUROSAWA Centenary Exhibition ALL FOR CINEMA
featuring storyboards fron KAGEMUSHA, RAN, DREAMS, RHAPSODY IN AUGUST, MADADAYO and THE SEA WATCHES | Today, more than a decade after his passing, Akira Kurosawa’s name continues to shine gloriously in the world of cinema. Initially, the young Kurosawa aspired to become a painter, and his works were admitted to the prestigious Nika Exhibition at the age of 18. Realizing he could not wear two hats when deciding to pursue a career in movie production, he resolutely quit painting and burnt all the works he had completed until then. More than half a century later and with the film production of “Kagemusha” facing shelving due to budgetary constraints, he took up his paint brush again to painstakingly and passionately paint the “storyboards” showing the imageries he tried to materialize in the film.
Since “Kagemusha,” storyboarding has become one of the key facets of Kurosawa’s film-making. He drew and left over 2,000 storyboards in his lifetime. When we view the finished films, we are surprised at how precisely the emotions of the characters, costumes, sets, lighting, and framing and composition depicted in the storyboards are replicated by the films. It is as if the films were already complete in Kurosawa’s mind when he drew the storyboards. Looking at these exquisitely executed storyboards takes us to the origin of Kurosawa’s movies, acclaim reflected in comments like “each frame is as beautiful as a piece of photography.” In addition to film, the art industry is also showing keen interest in Kurosawa’s artistic storyboards, some of which have already been displayed at such prestigious museums as the Petit Palais, City of Paris Fine Art Museum and the Pera Museum, Istanbul, Turkey. Exhibitions are also scheduled in Brazil, Spain and elsewhere. We hope you enjoy immersing yourself in the world of Kurosawa’s inspired storyboards, the source of Kurosawa movies, which continue to timelessly enchant people from all walks of life.
